“Adventurer, Go Ahead and Try.”

A Day Ettore Sottsass Gave Me the Courage to Move Forward

On June 30, 2026, I visited the Ettore Sottsass exhibition in Tokyo.

I first encountered his work when I was in high school, in a design textbook.

Bold colors.
Unexpected balance.
To be honest, it didn’t seem very practical.
But it was exciting.

There was also one of his sculptural works at the entrance of the LOFT store near Gifu Station. I didn’t know much about him then, but the feeling of “there’s something special about this” stayed with me for years.

So when I heard about this exhibition in Tokyo, I knew I had to go.

What struck me most was learning that Sottsass grew tired of a world where design was judged only by practicality. Instead, he set out on a journey in search of joy and beauty.

To me, that wasn’t simply a change in style.

It was an adventure.

That idea resonated deeply with me.

I spend my days designing spaces and furniture for children.

Of course, safety and functionality are non-negotiable.
They always come first.

But I also believe there is room for something more.

Something that makes your heart smile.

A space that makes a child say “Wow” the moment they see it.
Something they can’t resist touching.
A place they will remember even after they grow up.

I believe design can achieve all of that without sacrificing safety or usability.

Lately, I’ve been trying to bring those ideas into my own work.

Tent-like spaces.
Animal-inspired signs.
Turning strawberries and other fruits into contemporary art.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m going too far.

But as I walked through the exhibition, those doubts quietly faded away.

It felt as though Sottsass was saying to me,

“Adventurer, you should try.”

Design is not only about solving problems.

It is also about moving people’s hearts.

About making everyday life just a little more joyful.

I believe that, too, is one of design’s most important roles.

This exhibition wasn’t simply about looking at beautiful objects.

It became a chance to ask myself what kind of designer I want to be from here on.

Thank you for the courage.
